A brief on EUREPGAP and the Conference
Globalization has intensified competition and required players to implement aggressive product research and development, marketing and quality controls. However, as volume of business expands worldwide, the issues on sustainability and consumer health and safety are increasingly raised. At the heart of these concerns is the environment from which industries draw its resources.
How are consumers assured that the food they buy are safe? Is the supply chain prepared to meet the more strict food requirements particularly from the EU? What is the link between the changing regulatory and market requirements? Developing country suppliers are looking for predictability, transparency, and consistency in the further development and application of the rules of the food safety and quality game; how can this be assured? Will investments to comply with the standard pay off for farmers and processors? How can national circumstances and development priorities be reflected in national codes of Good Agricultural Practice? What is the role of holistic management approaches such as integrated pest management? Does technology play a role in this program?
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will hold, as part of the conference, a stakeholder workshop on how to accommodate national (regulatory, agronomic and social) circumstances and development priorities in national GAP codes . EUREP GAP is encouraging these schemes to , which are ultimately benchmark ed to EurepGAP. The stakeholder discussion will review pro ’s and con’s will be based on country-case studies for Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
